There have been many books published about the implications of the transition from print to digital and the effect that this will have on libraries, librarians and their clientele. It is difficult to think of another, however, which is quite so radical and futuristic in vision than this one by George Stachokas. Stachokas believes that, essentially, there is no future for the traditional, print-based or even hybrid library - hence the title, "after the book". Instead, the future of information provision will be almost entirely digital with the exception of special/rare archives and off-site print repositories for material which is not, or cannot be made, available electronically. Stachokas does not appear to have a time frame in mind for this brave new world but provides detailed plans for the transition.

Purpose - Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) is a location determination technology that has been receiving a lot of commercial attention in recent times, especially in the areas of asset tracking and supply chain management. The purpose of this paper is to outline a library prototype that utilises RFID in order to enhance and speed up the current customer book search and identification processes. Design/methodology/approach - The hardware to be used in the design and implementation of the prototypes include a laptop to host the server, a router to create the wireless network, a PDA to host the applications, RFID tags and an RED reader to carry out the RFID communication. Findings - The functionality and benefits offered by the RFID systems match the needs and areas of improvement for libraries. RFID technology can help streamline major library processes such as stocktaking and book searches. Already approximately 8 per cent of libraries worldwide are using RFID, and it will be incorporated into many items libraries purchase in the future. The development and evaluation of the Library Application has demonstrated that RFID can be successfully integrated into library systems. Practical implications - RFID systems can be integrated into existing library systems to improve the efficiency of the main processes carried out in any library and increase the quality of services provided. The ability of RFID to uniquely identify every item is very suitable for libraries. Originality/value - Presents an RFID enabled library system to aid in the speed of identifying and finding books for the customer.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to provide a case study of Florida's Orange County Library System (OCLS) home delivery program, including the
history, processes and cost-effectiveness of the service.
Design/methodology/approach - The approach takes a descriptive form.
Findings - It was found that the service continues to grow from 9,000 books delivered in 1975 to 840,000 in 2008. It is cost-effective and the most
popular service with patrons.
Originality/value - The paper is one of the few that describes a successful home delivery service run by a public library. It should be useful for all
librarians who are keen to introduce such a service in their own library.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to explore the impact of international library materials aid in primary schools and to outline obstacles to effective utilization for maximum literacy benefits among primary school children.Design/methodology/approach - Data were gathered via interviews, observation, focus group discussions and document analyses.Findings - Findings indicate that teachers were trained by Kenya National Library Services Kisii Branch staff on basics of library materials management before literacy materials were sent to the schools; teachers and pupils reported that development of vocabulary and better essay writing are some of the benefits of the donated materials; and culturally distanced materials and school dynamics impact negatively on the effective utilization of the donated library resources.Practical implications - The authors recommend that donors work hand in hand with the Ministry of Education and other local stakeholders that it may be possible to address obstacles to proper and highly effective implementation of literacy empowerment projects.Originality/value - The findings of this study are from original research and the implications must be treated as such.

The Library Screen Scene: Film and Media Literacy in Schools, Colleges, and Communities (ISBN: 978-0190854324, 376 pp., $ 34.95), by Renee Hobbs, Liz Deslauriers, and Pam Steager, covers shared media experiences such as film screening, learning to computer animate, and video editing. The book names five practices used by librarians who work with film and media: viewing, creating, learning, collecting, and connecting. It shows how film and media literacy education programs, library services, and media collections teach patrons to critically analyze film.

In this report, we describe a joint project between a mathematics content course and literacy methods course for pre-service elementary teachers that resulted in our students writing children's mathematically themed books. Out report then focuses first on the creative process of combining mathematical knowledge and ideas for teaching with the craft of writing for children, and second on the creative connection between mathematics and literacy education at the elementary school level.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to encourage reference librarians to utilize eBooks to their advantage at the reference desk, for point of need and collection development purposes. Design/methodology/approach – An overview of eBook utility at the reference desk and strategies for dealing with their shortcomings are provided. The collection development and collection management of eBooks are also discussed. A survey of first-year college students provides a current projection of usage. Findings – The paper notes that eBooks are well-utilized by patrons in academic libraries and offer several conveniences. Practical implications – Reference librarians may find this information helpful in serving their on- and off-campus patrons. Originality/value – This paper outlines “talking points” for the utilization, promotion, and collection development of eBooks.

Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to understand the effect of internet book reviews on reader borrowing intention.
Design/methodology/approach - The study used www.yumau.com, www.ptt.ee and the bulletin board system on www.lib.ntou.edu.tw to post announcements, soliciting 33 readers who had browsed internet book reviews to identify books to borrow. Then, using a content analytic method to analyze interview content, an investigation was conducted on the effect of internet book reviews, numbers of references and content of internet book reviews on reader borrowing intention. Findings - These results revealed that numbers of references and content of internet book reviews play an important role in borrowing intention.
Practical implications - These results can provide librarians with a reference for promoting book-borrowing activities. They can also provide internet bookstores with a reference for managing their book reviews.
Originality/value - Electronic word-of-mouth reviews have become an important guide to reader borrowing intention. The study investigates readers' thoughts on internet book reviews and their effects, and advances several management suggestions.

With the vigorous development of network information technology, e-book borrowing service came into being and showed a vigorous development trend. Therefore, in order to strengthen the service function, the library needs to gradually improve the e-book borrowing service, so as to provide readers with high-quality service content, so that the library can give full play to its function of disseminating scientific and cultural knowledge. Therefore, in this article research, we first discuss the main reading methods of e-books, then investigate the current reading situation of e-books and traditional paper books in the library, and then put forward corresponding development strategies to effectively promote the rapid development of the library and strengthen the level of e-book borrowing service.
